The song that illustrates the rage of both communities, “The Drums of War,” is another brilliant piece that really cuts to the heart of things. Kocoum’s death was the last straw for them, and they intend to execute John Smith in front of his people just before the battle starts. Radcliffe uses this as an excuse to rile everyone up, claiming it is for John’s rescue, but his true intention is to eliminate the “savages” once and for all.Īnd the Powhatans have come to think of the settlers as savages at this point as well. Several other Powhatan men rush onto the scene at about this time, and they capture John Smith, accusing him of Kocoum’s murder. Thomas, a friend of John’s, is also watching from nearby and shoots Kocoum, killing him. Kocoum sees Pocahontas kissing John Smith, and attacks (with pretty good reason, considering his point of view). Tensions are high, and the breaking point is reached when they are both followed. There has already been violence between the two groups. And the more John Smith sneaks off to go see her, the more suspicious Radcliffe gets. The more Pocahontas leaves the village to go see John Smith, the more those who care about her worry. If not for all the obstacles in their way, they would make a great couple.Īlas, their relationship is rather frowned upon. She and John Smith are fascinated by each other, and they have similar dispositions.

She learns about where he’s from and what he’s doing there, and he learns a lot about painting with all the colors of the wind (a beautiful song and a lovely metaphor about accepting all ethnicities as equal). (There is a language barrier, but it is skimmed over by the whole “listen with your heart” thing). Once their initial suspicion of each other wears off, they begin to talk and ask each other questions. He runs in to Pocahontas, as she was curiously observing him from the shadows. When the settlers first come to shore, the ship’s captain, an explorer named John Smith, goes immediately out to look around. His men trust and follow him, however, and so of course conflict is stirred up right away.īut not with everyone. He sees the natives only as subhuman heathens, constantly accusing them of violence and dishonesty (when he is definitely the most violent and dishonest one around). He essentially embodies the narrow-mindedness and aggressive ignorance that has torn people of different ethnicities apart for thousands of years.

There is instant suspicion and tension between the Powhatan people and the colonists, and Radcliffe exacerbates it a lot. Governor Radcliffe is a greedy social climber who has come to the New World solely for riches and glory. Their fear, particularly fear of the natives, is encouraged by the movie’s villain. Most of the men on the ship are just honest folk who are uneasy about the new environment. Jamestown is therefore founded, and the dig for gold is begun immediately. Not even a day later, a ship comes to shore, and the English explorers/colonists on board have every intention of making themselves at home there. But Pocahontas feels she’s destined for more than a normal life with “a handsome sturdy husband who builds handsome sturdy walls.” She feels in her gut that something big is coming, that somehow things are about to change.Īnd oh how right she is. He’s fierce and loyal, and I myself wouldn’t be too unhappy if he was matched with me. Kocoum is the head warrior, and Pocahontas isn’t wrong when she says he’s “so… serious.” But I think that’s to his credit. She is to marry Kocoum.Īnd in my opinion, she could do much worse. She’s eighteen in this movie, so it is about time. Everything is going well, and Powhatan decides that it is a good time to arrange a marriage for his daughter. The warriors have just come home from a successful war against a rival tribe, and the harvest is being brought in. In the beginning of the film, life couldn’t be going much better. They are another good example of a strong father/daughter bond in a Disney movie. Pocahontas is the only daughter of Chief Powhatan. The character Pocahontas is based off of a real woman of the same name who lived from 1595 to 1617, and I’ll talk more about her history later on. Pocahontas came out in 1995, giving us our first Native American princess.
